The Best Waterproof Electric Patio Heaters in 2024 + BONUS (Gas Model)

If you’re looking for a device to heat your outdoor patio, chances are you’d want it waterproof, right? Then you’ve come to the right place — in this post, we’ll talk about what “waterproof” actually means in the context of outdoor heaters, and you’ll see my list of the top waterproof heaters on the market in 2024.

Waterproof electric patio heater

What Is a Waterproof Patio Heater?

The answer seems relatively straightforward. It’s a heater that can withstand rain, some snow, and a good cleaning with the water hose, right?

The thing is, a device can have varying levels of resistance to water. First, let me clear up the common misconception that ‘waterproof’ and ‘water-resistant’ are the same thing. They are not — the former implies complete defence against water ingress, whilst the former simply means some level of protection.

To measure the resistance (or proof) of a waterproof outdoor heater against water intrusion, manufacturers use the Ingress Protection (IP) scale.

IP rating ratings are pretty straightforward – the higher the number, the better the protection. The IP scale goes from 0-9, where X0 is no protection, water-resistance starts around X3, and X9 is 100% waterproof. We’re particularly interested in the last digit, as it indicates the degree of protection against water ingress.

IP Rating Table

First Digit Solids Protection Second Digit

Liquids Protection

0 No protection 0 No protection
1 Protected against solid objects over 50mm, e.g. accidental touch by hands. 1 Protected against vertically falling drops of water, e.g. condensation.
2 Protected against solid objects over 12mm, e.g. fingers. 2 Protected against direct sprays of water up to 150 from the vertical.
3 Protected against solid objects over 2.5mm, e.g. tools & wires. 3 Protected against direct sprays of water up to 600 from the vertical.
4 Protected against solid objects over 1mm, e.g. wires & nails. 4 Protected against water splashed from all directions, limited ingress permitted.
5 Protected against dust limited ingress, no harmful deposits. 5 Protected against low-pressure jets of water from all directions, limited ingress permitted.
6 Totally protected against dust. 6 Protected against strong jets of water, e.g. on ships deck, limited ingress permitted.

The majority of patio heaters have an IP rating of at least IPX4, which means they are able to withstand splashes. Some patio heaters marketed as ‘waterproof’ will be rated IPX5, which translates to ‘limited ingress when exposed to strong jets of water’. That’s a reasonably strong defence against water, so an IPX5 heater can safely stay outdoors during a drizzle.

Since most patio heaters are mounted under some form of roof, or awning, an IPX4 ‘splash-resistant’ rating will do just fine. However, if you want to keep your device free from all debris, like bird droppings, twigs, and even dust, I’d recommend you go for an IP65 outdoor heater.

Now, back to our initial question: what is a waterproof patio heater? It is a heater with an IP rating no lower than IPX5. Regardless of the rating, you should always strive to keep your heater away from water, even when you’re not using it.

How Are Heaters Protected From Water?

You can find a waterproof outdoor heater with an IPX5 rating, and most of these are wall-mounted infrared units (read more about infrared heaters here). These wall-mounted heaters are typically placed under an awning, in a gazebo, or on the fence under a patio roof – which makes them waterproof by default.

That said, wall-mounted heaters are permanently fixed in place. Since they’re stuck on the wall rain or shine, a high IP rating is more paramount for wall-mounted units than for the portable, free-standing variants.

There are many other types of patio heaters that can be left safely outdoors in wet weather. Most gas-fuelled heaters, for instance, will seldom see damage from rain. This is because their top usually functions as a cover. Besides, there aren’t any serious safety implications to water getting into a gas burner.

Below, I’ve compiled a list of the best waterproof heater models available online today.

What About Waterproof Gas Patio Heaters?

BU-KO Waterproof Patio Heater (Gas)

BU-KO Waterproof Patio Heater (Gas)

The BU-KO pyramid gas-heater is one of the most popular gas-fuelled patio heaters on the market. The design is elegant, and the open flame creates adds comfort to the ambience. The pagoda-shaped reflector at the top makes sure that maximum heat is radiated and spread out over a 3-metre radius.

The manufacturer claims the BU-KO patio heater to be waterproof, and that the high-grade stainless steel and powder-coated aluminium can withstand almost any weather. It’s CE-approved per European safety standards, and has a standard valve that turns the heater off if it’s tilted. A step-by-step assembly video guide makes installation a breeze.

 Specifications

  • Height: 227 cm
  • Weight: ~29kg
  • Power source: Propane/ LPG
  • Output: 13kW
  • Material: Stainless steel/aluminium
  • Water resistance: n/a

What do people say about it? Most reviewers are happy with the gentle, yet powerful heat that is very easy to adjust to the desired level. The Bluetooth speakers are not top-quality, apparently. It takes a while to assemble the heater, but the instructions are clear enough, and the video guide makes them easy to understand.

Pros:

  • Very sturdy
  • Strong heat output
  • Easily adjusted heat.

Cons:

  • Long assembly time
  • Poor-quality speakers

To summarise

I have added the BU-KO to this list even though it does not come with an IP rating. That’s because the BU-KO is an excellent choice if you don’t want a wall-mounted unit, as most water-proof heaters tend to be.

Since it’s gas-fired, the BU-KO doesn’t come with the inherent hazard that all electric heaters have when exposed to water. Besides, the flame is encompassed in a glass tube, and the top of the heater creates a shield from rain and snow. Like with any other heater, though, don’t leave the BU-KO out in heavy rain day-after-day without a cover.

Are Waterproof Patio Heaters Safe?

Even a waterproof outdoor heater can potentially cause damage, personal injury, or a fire if it’s not handled correctly. Most heaters come with their share of safety mechanisms, but you should still always follow safety instructions for installation and everyday use.

I won’t advise you to hang a heater close to other objects, such as a roof, ceiling, floor, or ornaments, as this can cause a severe fire hazard.

Electric heaters have an electric cord that can be a tripping hazard when it’s not put firmly away. A wall-mounted waterproof heater benefits from being bracketed, with the electric cord located safely out of the way. The heating element itself should also be mounted far away from probing fingers (especially if you’ve got kids running around).

A gas heater should never be used indoors, or even on a covered porch, as it can pose a serious health risk with its dangerous carbon monoxide fumes. Gas heaters are made strictly for outdoor use, where they excel at heating large areas.

Waterproof patio heater

Just like any other item that you use often, your newly purchased waterproof patio heater will need regular maintenance. Be sure to clean it often, so the dust build-up doesn’t raise the risk of fire. Of course, never leave electrical appliances plugged in and running in wet weather.

Finally, remember to buy a waterproof cover for your heater if you want it to last for a long time.
